My inspiration comes when I read articles or see posters on the train or subway. Jacob is your website going dark at 9:30 am this Friday as hundreds of other sites are planning to for sandy hook shooting victims?

We use a number of automated tools however, a simple method is to use a spreadsheet. Using a few columns to create a list of compound words which we then feed into a bulk domain search at one of the registrars to check availability. We have a subset of available domains we allow free access to for whomever wants to join up.

I find domains following offline world such interacting with people who don’t have to do anything with online world and who don’t care about online world.

domain name extensions

The new top-level domain name extensions provide a new face for Internet websites and fills URL address bars with .LOLS, .RIP, .DOCS, .SUCKS, and many more exciting new extensions for domain resellers and their clients.

ICANN’s decision to amend the Internet domain system will allow a huge number of new interesting suffixes instead of the traditional extension names such as .COM and .NET.

This will also yield high profits for domain resellers as larger companies move to protect their online real estate and pursue new marketing opportunities.

“ICANN developed the new generic Top-Level Domain Program to increase competition and choice by introducing new gTLDs into the Internet’s addressing system,” according to ICANN’s Press Release.

“What is a gTLD? It is an Internet domain name extension such as the familiar .com, .net, or .org. There are 280 ccTLDs but only 22 ‘generics’ in the domain name system right now, but that is all about to change.”

You will be able to visit your favorite brand with its own gTLD’s such as .NIKE, .SKYPE, .YOUTUBE, .BOSCH, and many more.

“In 2008, ICANN announced a program to expand the number of generic TLDs (think .com, .org, .edu), developed through its bottom-up, multi-stakeholder process, in which we participate,” said Vince Cerf, Internet Evangelist, Google Inc.

“Given this expansion process, we decided to submit applications for new TLDs, which generally fall into four categories.”

Trademarks, like .Google
Domains related to core business areas, like .docs
Domains that will improve user experience, such as. YouTube, which can increase the ease with which YouTube channels and genres can be identified
Domains with interesting and creative potential, such as .lol
Here are the six proposed new top-level domain name extensions:

.App
The .app domain will be the home of mobile application developers. This is a great opportunity to showcase their projects using this extension. You can now stake a claim to your app name on the pre-registration page.

.Blog
The .blog domain name is related to any blog site. It can increase the brand’s online presence, traffic, and revenue. It’s available for online publishers and businesses. Instead of using “yourname.com,” you can apply “yourname.blog.”

.Docs
Google uses the .docs domain extension since it is involved in online document management. However, it’s quite surprising that Google is the one of the few companies currently vying for this name. In fact, there are many companies out there involved in this service that could benefit from purchasing this extension.

.Lol
Several companies are competing for this domain name extension; including Google.

.Love
.Love aims to spread the love using the Internet. It is also symbolic and valuable for non-profit organizations to acquire this extension in line with their purpose. It is not associated to any adult or sex industry.

“.Love Inc is a group of Internet, legal and managerial volunteers that seek to enable love at a collective level. We are a bridge between the virtual world and the real world to promote love globally and locally,” said Cerf.

.Sucks
A holding company based in Ottawa, Canada, Momentous Corp. wants to hold an Internet landscape of open community for opinions and debates. It’s a home for iOS.sucks and Android.sucks domain names.

“DotSUCKS may be the most ambitious application. When we consider product reviews, online dialog rarely satisfies the consumer who wants to be heard or the companies who are anxious to respond,” said Suzy Kendrick, Corporate Communications Manager.  The mission of DotSUCKS is to create a new space on the web that will give voice to consumers and create the opportunity for closer contact between companies their customers.”

How to register and buy your Domain Name

How to register and buy your Domain Name

Looking for a good Domain Name? Use the Search on DomainTyper, choose the extension (.Com, .Net, etc.) and buy it now before someone else does.

Here is some important information before buying a Domain Name.

Extensions

You can register multiple domains with different extensions, it’s up to you. Investing in other extensions becomes important when patenting something or protecting a trademark. Like Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.fr. Beside the other extensions I strongly recommend to buy a .com.

Price

The exact price varies depending on which domain extension you go with. Some domain extensions are more expensive than others. You will need either a Credit Card or a PayPal account to pay for the domain. It will allow you to claim and get the domain name immediately on application. (Varies on extensions)

Contact details

You must supply up to date contact details. Domain Name Registrars won’t let you register a domain name without providing these details. Keep your domain registration up to date. If you have any changes to your domain or contact information including your e-mail address, update your domain information immediately. If your information isn’t current, you could lose access to your domain or even miss e-mail reminders to renew your domain.

Private registration

If you don’t like the idea of having your details available on the internet, you can apply for the private domain registration. This ensures that your details are hidden from public view. Without a private registration, anyone can see the details of a domain registrant by using the publicly available “WHOIS” database. Anyone could look up your details by going to the WHOIS database and entering your domain name. If you register a domain name as a private registration, your details are replaced with a proxy company. When somebody does a WHOIS search on your domain name, the details of the proxy company appear instead of yours.

Domain expiration

You can choose to register your domain for a single year or for multiple years at a time. Registering for more years earns you a small discount. If you choose to register for only a year, you need to renew the domain in a year to keep your Web site going. You can ask for email alerts to aware you when your domain is about to expire.

Be the owner of your Domain

Before choosing the company to register your name with, make sure that you will be the owner of the new domain. Some Hosting companies offer free Domain Name registration, but watch out as these companies usually keep the domain as their property. If you choose to leave the company you will have trouble moving your domain to another host. So when registering a domain name, make sure that you are registered owner, the administrative and technical contact as well.

Now that you’ve registered a domain name, you have a home for your online business on the Web. To turn it into a functioning website you need to have a Web Hosting plan. This is the next step in starting an online business.

GoDaddy is a domain registrar as well as a Hosting provider so you can use their service to register your domain and also to host your site.

Reordering Domains

Is Your Domain Name Safe?

Is Your Domain Name Safe?
Imagine how Coca-Cola® would feel if another soft drink manufacturer copied the design of their bottles in an effort to boost their own sales. Essentially, they are trying to profit off Coca-Cola®’s brand reputation. When you are running an ecommerce site, your domain name is your brand. Your domain name is the address customers use to find you based on your quality reputation. It takes time to build that kind of customer loyalty and a good standing, so you do not want to throw it away by losing your domain name or letting someone else with a copycat-domain cash in on your hard work.

Domain Expiration
Most businesses register their domain name for 10 years or more so they do not have to worry about losing their most valuable brand asset. However, sometimes this leads to complacency because site owners forget that all domain names eventually have to be renewed. The online world is full of “domain vultures” who would love to swoop in and steal your established brand. Make it a point to check the status of your domain registration on a regular basis.

Domain Name Extensions
Once someone finds that perfect domain name, he or she usually snatches up the name with a .com extension and may or not think of buying other extensions. Say you buy isellwidgets.com and set-up a prosperous e-commerce site. If you are not careful, one of your competitors can buy isellwidgets.net. Since people sometimes easily confuse extensions, the owner of the .net domain will be able to “steal” business from your website from customers who type in the wrong address. It is a good idea to buy the .com, .net and as many other extensions as you can so that this does not happen to you.

Common Misspellings
While you cannot account for every typo, there are certain ones you can be almost certain will happen. Using the example above, someone could easily forget to type the “s” and enter www.isellwidget.com in his or her browser window. If one of your competitors had the foresight to buy that domain, that competitor may be able to get business from a customer who should have been yours. Try to think of common mistakes that people may make typing in your URL, buy those extra domains and redirect them to your real website.

Avoid Alternative Spellings
You may be tempted to use alternative spellings in order to get the domain name you want. For example, you might choose katskorner.com because catscorner.com is too expensive or is not available. The problem is that when customers hear about your site, they hear “cats corner dot com.” Most people would use the logical spelling. Use the proper spelling for words in your domain name instead of coming up with creative substitutions.

In most cases, registering domain names is inexpensive. Since your domain name is such a crucial part of your ecommerce business’s identity, it is worth spending a few extra dollars to keep your brand safe. A little forethought when you register your domain will save you a lot of aggravation once your business is successful.

Domain Name Expiration Date

Domain Name Expiration Date: Should You Pay Attention?

Don’t let your Domain Name get lost!

After you have finally registered the perfect domain name, it would be a   shame to lose it, wouldn’t it?
Most people tend to forget about the fact that their domain name can expire. Yes, it is possible and a lot of customers forget easily about domain name renewal. Here is some useful advice for you to avoid this unfortunate event, preventing you from losing control over your domain.

Things to keep in mind!

- First of all make sure that all your contact details are precise and up to date. Otherwise you may not get an important email, which can be about your domain’s currency.
- You will get five notifications before the actual expiry date. Do not ignore them, because after that it’s not so easy to renew your domain name. It depends on the site where you got it.
- Although many websites threatens you that your domain name expires immediately when the expiry date comes, it is not true.
- If your domain name not renewed by the expiration date then it goes to expired status. Which means that you have another 30-45 days to renew it.
- In this 30-45 days the services are off and you also have to pay a fee when you would like to renew it.
- After you have successfully renewed your domain, it will take another 2 days for it to function again due to propagation issues on the DNS.

What else can happen if your Domain Name expired?

If you refuse to renew your domain name after the 30-45 days, then your domain name’s status turns into “redemption period.” This means that it cannot be renewed through the normal method anymore. The reactivation as well as the re register fee can be really costly. The redemption period is 30 days long.
After this period comes the domain’s next status, namely the “locked status”, in which period deletion time stretches 5 days long. After that it will be available to anyone to registrate.
Although it seems a long time interval, I would not suggest to procrastinate, as it doesn’t worth the additional money, stress and the scary possibility to lose your access to your domain.

What happens after the Domain Name gets deleted?

As it was mentioned before, when the domain finally gets deleted it is immediately becomes available again. The fastest customer can take it. Valuable ones can be re-registered in a minute. In this case you lose it forever. While other domains categorized useless are never re registered again. That is why renewing a valuable domain name is always vital in order to avoid embarrassment.
All in all I would suggest you to take care of your domain name, do not forget about it, do not give the chance to somebody else to grab it from you! If you keep in mind all the details which I highlighted for you, then you will become a caring and reliable domain name owner. Which means that you can continue to use your favourite domain.
So don’t be lazy! Renew your domain from time to time when it gets close to the expiry!

get a domain name

How do I get a website name?

in an email. Website name? The question could mean many things. She might be looking for a brandable word to name her website, or, she was looking for exact domain name for her website.

After a couple of emails to and fro, I could get her question properly. She could have asked “How do I get domain name?” and it would allow me to fire the answer quicker.

This is nothing new incident. We often get too generic questions and need to throw several questions back to understand the real problem. Obviously, it is the most important to understand the problem correctly before you could suggest any solution.

There are many funny incidents when you hurry to offer suggestions without getting the question properly. When nothing works, both of us realize that one could not explain the problem and the other offered solution without knowing the it. Whatever, this is not the topic of today’s discussion. We’ll be looking at different factors to make you able to buy a new domain name for your blog.

Why should you have your own domain name?
As we already learned, we can run websites with the free subdomains offered by free hosting. However having your own domain name is very important and I believe, it is the most essential to start any blog. There are a number of good reasons for having a domain name:

Domain name is always with you
During the lifespan of a website, you may change the hosting many times. When you change the web host, the IP Address that points to your blog changes. It is the domain name that always remains unchanged.

Your regular visitors or customers who knew your site name as bivori.com  (for example) would not have to be informed about a change of host. They can simply type your domain name and arrive to your new site.

Domain Name Gives Credibility
For any business or blogs, a domain name gives you credibility. You can’t expect anybody willing to do business through a website that does not have its own domain name.

If you get a domain name that describes your product or name, people can remember it easily and can return to your site without having to consult the documents. You will get direct traffic wihtout heavy advertising. If your product is popular, enjoy the goodwill of your product to convert the website traffic. There can be many people who were trying their luck by typing “www.productName.com” in their browser.

Get Sponsors and Advertisers
This is also something similar to the above point – credibility. When you are running your website or blog in subdomain such as myAwesomeBlog.blogspot.com or TheBestTipsForYourLife.wordpress.com, you won’t get any sponsors or advertisers for your blog. For good sponsors, a domain name is usually thought essential.

How Do I Get A Domain Name?
Getting a domain name involves the steps such as:

Find a name that is unique, short and meaningful for your blog
Make sure the name you choose is not already registered by others and still available.
Choose a reliable domain name registrar and register your name to ICANN through them.
To register a domain name you need to pay an annual fee to the domain registrar. It generally costs around US$ 10 to US$ 35 per year and you should renew it every year. Usually the renewal fee is same as that of first year but many registrars offer some discount for the first year of registration.

Some web hosts offer you one domain name for free when you buy hosting from them.  Some other hosts will register domain name for you but you’ll have to foot the registrar fees.

Whether your host offers free domain name or bought one on your behalf, pay attention if you are the real owner of that domain name. I always preferred to buy domain name directly from registrar (I mostly use GoDaddy) rather than through my hosts. I can’t compromise the quality for my comfort. There are many instances where the hosts registered the domain name under their own name. That’s completely a bull shit! You pay off the annual fees and you are not the rightful owner of that name!

You can’t change the host when you need because your domain name is tied with them! When you move away, you have nothing with you?

It is often with ‘less-than-reputable’ web hosts. That’s why I always recommend clients to use good hosts like HostGator. You should make sure that you are the registered owner, the administrative and technical contacts.

The administrative contact is also important because his/her approval is required before a domain name is transferred to other registrar. If he/she cannot be contacted, the technical contact is used.

The Common Domain Name Mistakes
Before I talk about how to buy domain names online, I think I should beware you of a few points so that you don’t repeat the same mistakes. As I said, ‘life is too short to commit all the mistakes to learn lessons’

Mistake #1. Long domain names
A good domain name should be as short as is practically possible. However, many newbies make mistake trying to use the full business name or trying to inject all the important keyword in domain names.

Domain name is for human and long one is always harder for them to remember. So, it is better to come up with a short domain name even if it means shortening your business name or abbreviating it.

Mistake #2. Using hyphens in domains
Hyphens have no negative impact on SEO and this fact attracted many SEO veterans to use it when they don’t get the exact domain name available. However, very few people might actually remember to type the hyphen in the address bar.

The consequence can be that your traffic are landing to a different blog because they forgot to type some hyphens.

Mistake #3. Ambiguity in domains
It is important to make sure you choose a domain name that has no ambiguity at all, otherwise, you might just send a wrong signal. I have a very funny experience. I was creating a website for Public Service Examination and thus registered a domain name psExam.com. After a long time I discovered that it is being blocked by many firewalls because it contained the word SEX – pSEXam.com.

Thus look at the domain name combining different characters and make sure it does not produce other meanings.

Mistake #4. Including numbers in domains
As long as it is absolutely necessary, I suggest you to avoid using numbers in domain names. Reason is similar to that of hyphens. Numbers make it difficult for human users to remember. Who invented that mathematics?

As an example, if your blog is 7days.com, it is very possible that people will enter sevendays.com if you told about your website over phone. To avoid such situations, try to use words instead of numbers for domain names.

Mistake #5. Wrong domain extensions
There are several domain extensions to choose from like .com, .au, .com, .org, .info, .net, etc. All these extensions have their own uses and meanings.

As I told you in my previous post that .com is used to mean commercial websites while .org is set aside for charities and non profit organizations.

Using the wrong domain extension can confuse visitors whereas the correct one will be intuitive to them. If you are setting up an e-commerce store, you would be better of using a .com extension. Visitors can guess what type of website it is before the page finishes loading just by seeing the domain extension.

Step By Step Instructions to Register Domain Names
If you want to buy a domain name, here’s the step by step instruction to follow. Please read it carefully before you act.

Step #1 » Think of a good name
Think of a few good domain names that you’d like to use. Often, only one name won’t work – it might already be taken (it probably is!).

You should check if the domain you choose is still available to register. Getting a good domain name available is often much harder than expected. You can use following tools to help you search and get idea of a new domain name. They will not only verify if they are available or not but also can suggest for better alternatives.

Best tools to search domain names:
Advanced Domain Search Tool by GoDaddy: This is domain search tool by the #1 domain registrar. Enter your chosen name and click Search.
Instant Domain Search: Check availability by start typing a name
123.reg.co: Check availability and click on Domain Suggestions if your chosen name is already taken
NameBoy: A great tool if you are looking for keyword rich domain names. Enter your primary and secondary keyword and click Search.
NameCheck: Check all at once – the availability of domain name for your name or product and at the same time the usernames in social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. After all, you’ll need the same names on those networks after you have the domain name, why not to check the availability when you are buying a new domain name?
Bust A Name: has both options. You can type some keywords and the tool will search the best available domain name combining those keywords or you can enter your domain name so that it can check if it is available and offer suggestions if it is already taken.
Verio Domain Search: Enter upto 10 domain names, choose extensions and click search. You have options to include synonyms and hyphens.
Domainr: A domain name search engine. A great user experience and very fast search.
JustDropped: As the name tells it, you can search for the expired domain names and recycle them. Please read my previous post (Domain Names – The unique name of your blog) to realize the importance of recycled domain names.
Yahoo Domain Names: Another great tool from the well reputed Yahoo!
Step #2 »  Think about payment processor
If you want to buy domain name online and get it instantly, you should have some online payment method. You will need either a credit card or a PayPal account to pay for the domain.

If you don’t have any online payment options (as is the case mostly in my country – Nepal), you’ll have to rely on your local domain registrars.

Step #3 » Get NameServers from your host
Though you’ll buy hosting after you get the domain name, but if you already have a web host, obtain from them the names of their primary and secondary nameservers.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand what the name servers are, we’ve not discussed them yet. I’ll explain about name servers while discussing the hosting.

The information about Name Servers can usually be obtained from their FAQs or Control Panel screen. You can email them or contact the online support if you can’t find nameserver by yourself. This information is used to point your domain name to your website after you buy the domain. Don’t worry if you don’t have a web host yet. Just read on.

If you do not have a web host, you can park the domain name at a temporary website. Almost all of the domain registrars provide you domain parking. This way you can quickly secure your domain name before it’s too late. I know it will take some time for you to set up your blog. As far as I know, almost all registrars have automatic parking the domain by default.

If your registrar is good one like GoDaddy, they also provide you with a free email address at your own domain name. That’s how I have contact@bivori.com! It is important especially because you can provide your own contact email address when your website is not yet live.

Step #4 » Visit the registrar and fill up the form
Buying a domain name is not much different than creating your new email account in Gmail or Yahoo. Once you got the available name, you can create an account and add domain names by simply filling up the form, specify your payment method and submit.

That’s all for today’s post. I’ll be talking a bit about GoDaddy domain name and try to convince you why you must choose Godaddy as your domain registrar

Do you want to add more tools to search best domain names? What is your preferred domain registrar and why? Please share your views in comment, I’m waiting!

How to Check Domain Name Availability in WordPress.com?

A domain name’s purpose is to be found. Complex and unnecessarily long urls die unpleasant and lonely deaths. Simple and short domain names win.
Keywords open locked traffic. Like it or not, search engines decide where visitors go. If you don’t speak their language, Google and the rest of ’em won’t include your site on the tour.
Don’t develop a .complex
If the .com is taken try another extension like .CO or .BIZ. The right words in an alternate extension can set you apart from the crowd.

Is it possible to check for the availability of a domain name without creating an actual BLOG in WordPress.com?
In Blogger, you can do 'check availability' before you proceed with creating the blog. Thank you.

Sure. Type the url into your browser and you can immediately tell if it's used or not. Be aware that if it comes up with a blog that is inactive or one that has been deleted, those names are NOT available.

WHY EXACT MATCH DOMAIN NAMES ARE GOOD (OR BAD) FOR SEO

WHY EXACT MATCH DOMAIN NAMES ARE GOOD (OR BAD) FOR SEO

Should you acquire an Exact Match Domain Name as part of your Search Engine Optimization Strategy?
What is in a domain name? If you ask me, from a search engine optimization perspective, I would hope that a keyword is in your domain name. But maybe your domain name is the name of your company, or your main brand. That’s just fine. If that is the case–your domain name is your brand–you might consider purchasing an Exact Match Domain (EMD) as part of your overall search engine optimization strategy.

In this blog post, let’s consider why EMD domain names are generally good for your SEO strategy and when they might possibly be a bad move for SEO.

Exact Match Domain names are just that–domain names that contain an exact match of a keyword or keyword phrase. So, an example of an exact match domain name would be “books.com” or “travel.com” or even Keyword1Keyword2.com where “keyword1″ is one word and “keyword2″ is another keyword. It’s widely known in the SEO industry that having one of these keyword-rich Exact Match Domain names will astronomically increase the chances that the site will show up on the first page of the search results for a keyword search that contains those keywords or keyword phrase. Currently, this “additional ranking benefit” is only valid for .COM domain names that do NOT contain hyphens. The only other caveat is that the domain name must actually be a live website on the same topic as the keyword. Ideally, the home page should be about the topic of the keyword and it should be “optimized” for that keyword phrase. Just purchasing an Exact Match Domain name is not enough.

An Exact Match Domain name can be an asset for your search engine optimization efforts. It can truly give you the unique edge that you may need in order to increase your web site’s search engine rankings and bring targeted traffic to your web site. Certainly if you have a web site on that domain name, visitors will know what to expect when they get there. And it can give you an edge over your competitors. After all, there is only one Exact Match Domain name for every keyword phrase.

Value of Domain Names
When considering the value of a domain name, and purchasing a domain name, there are several factors to consider. Just like real estate, you’ll want to get a good idea of “comps,”what similar domain names have recently sold for in the past. You can search the domain name sales using DNSalePrice.com, which lists domain name prices when that data is available publicly. In some cases, you may even find the domain name you want if it was sold before.

The value of a domain name can be estimated, although really is ultimately determined on how much someone is willing to pay for it. There are a few online tools available to determine value, including Estibot.com and http://appraise.epik.com. Sites that do an automated valuation tend to use a combination of the amount of searches per month (if it contains a keyword) and the average CPC (cost per click) for that keyword. The higher the average CPC and the more people search for a keyword, the higher value an EMD will have.

Why EMD Domain Names are Bad for SEO?
By using an Exact Match Domain name for your website, you’re ultimately putting a limit on possible future expansion of your business. As you promote your website on other sites, as you get links, send out press releases, or get mentioned, other websites are going to use the name of your website and will link to your site using your keyword. You will be “known” and your overall reputation will be around that keyword, the one you’re using in your Exact Match Domain Name. Although you can get a good lift in search engine rankings, it may be limiting. I do believe that it will potentially limit your web site’s potential expansion for additional keywords and additional content beyond your main topic.

For example, if you are using something like “books.com” as your domain name, it may be tough to start selling music on the website. Certainly you could do it, but there is not going to be a very good chance that you could rank well in the search engines for “music” being that the website would traditionally be about books.

Another reason may be the location factor. If you own a local business and you’re targeting certain keyword phrases, or one keyword phrase in particular such as “cityname keyword” then an Exact Match Domain name might be just what you need. However, if you open up another location in another city, then the original “cityname keyword” domain name might not be appropriate.

Is an Exact Match Domain Name Right for You?
Ask yourself these questions:

Are you currently spending a significant amount of money on certain keywords in Google AdWords? If so, some of that budget could be diverted into acquiring an Exact Match Domain Name and building a website. Over the long-term, it may be cheaper to rank well for that keyword phrase in the natural search results–so you can spend less (or spend nothing) on that keyword phrase in the future.
Is your business primarily described by one major keyword or keyword phrase? Do you have a product or service (as a part of your business) that can be described by one major keyword or keyword phrase?
Is that one major keyword phrase available for registration in the .COM TLD? If so, you should register it immediately, even if you have no plans for using it. Owning it will stop your competitors from using it.
Can you acquire that keyword phrase in the .COM TLD? Is it available for sale at a reasonable price?
When it comes to search engine optimization, keep in mind that it’s only a EMD in the .COM TLD that’s going to make any difference and the domain name must contain a website. Weigh the cost of acquiring an EMD and the potential SEO benefit (better natural search engine rankings) with what you’re currently spending on Pay Per Click. And, if you just want to rank well for that keyword phrase–go ahead and purchase that EMD.

I'm super excited to have my friend Pamela here today as our BBC mentor! I started reading Pamela's blog when she was brand new last year and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Her little boy is just adorable and so is his mom!

Hi everyone! My name is Pamela, and I’m the author of PB&Jstories and I’m so excited to be here today with my good friend Kristin for this awesome series she’s doing that is so helpful for new bloggers (even veteran bloggers I’m sure will be able to learn a thing or two!)

I’m here today to talk about why you should buy your own domain from blogger for only $10/year and how to do it step-by-step.

If you’re already confused, let me break it down. Blogger is such a great host for blogs, it’s free, it’s easy to understand and design your layouts, and it’s hosted by Google so you have access to many great features. When you create a new blog hosted by Blogger you create your blog name and share your domain with blogger. For example when I first started blogging my domain was “www.pbjstories.blogspot.com,” you share your domain with blogger since they’re hosting it for free for you.
1settings
The number one reason I highly suggest purchasing your domain from blogger is for the future of your blog. Even if you are unsure of where your blog will be in a year, how many followers you will have, if you’ll create a business from your blog or any possible outcomes you have from creating your blog, there is a good chance your blog will become something that you hold dear to you and you’ll want your own name on it. By purchasing your domain from blogger early on, you are claiming your domain so no one else can purchase it first.  In under a year I created my own business under the PB&J name, I have my blog which is PB&Jstories, and my Etsy shop which is PB&Jcreations.  Let’s say I waited until my one year mark to purchase my domain from blogger, and I was ready to take the leap from www.pbjstories.blogspot.com to www.pbjstories.com and I go to make that purchase, but within that year, someone else purchased that domain via a different host then pbjstories.com would no longer be available to me.  Sad Day. That’s why I always suggest to new bloggers to make the switch and pay the $10/year for your domain from blogger.

The other great reason is for networking purposes.  It’s a lot easier when I’m meeting someone new and they ask what my blog address is for them to remember PBJstories.com rather than PBJstories.blogspot.com.  It’s concise, it’s professional, it’s so easy!

Here’s the step by step process of how to buy your domain from Blogger with the new layout design.  A big thanks to Kristen for taking the jump to purchase her own domain, and taking pictures for me to share with you for each step!

4 Factors to keep in Mind When Building Inbound Links

4 Factors to keep in Mind When Building Inbound Links
An Inbound link or a backlink, as it is commonly known, is the most chased after asset on the Internet. People involved in online marketing can walk a very lengthy mile to get high-quality backlinks, which brings us to the question that this article is set to address. What is a high-quality backlink? And how you can tell if the backlink is high quality or not?

These questions come naturally to mind when anyone mentions the term high-quality backlinks. Such question will stop bothering you, once you are through with this article.

Anatomy of a high quality backlink
Relevancy
An inbound link that is relevant to the theme of your website could be considered a high quality backlinks, though it is not the only thing that makes a backlink of high quality. Let’s say you have website about dog collars than a backlink from a website dealing with dog collar or any dog related stuff could be called relevant backlink.

Anchor text
Another factor that you should keep in mind when judging the quality of a backlink is the text used to link back to your web page. A link that has your main keyword in the anchor text has high potential to become a high-quality backlink.

Note: Do not use one keyword in anchor text of all the links that come back to your website because google may blacklist you, as this is not how natural links look like.

Status
All backlink sources are not equal. Some are more valuable, while others are utterly useless. A backlink from a government (.gov) or university website (.edu) is anytime more valuable than a backlink from an article directory. Similarly, a backlink from authority sites like Wikipedia, New York Times, CNN, Problogger, or Copyblogger, etc., are more valuable than a backlink from any other blog.

Page rank
This is the fourth factor that makes a link high-quality. A backlink from a high PR website is anytime more valuable than a backlink from a low PR or no PR website.

Ideally, you should search for a linking source that matches all the criteria I talked about above, but as they are not many such links are hard to get, which make them more valuable. In the absence of links that meet all the above given criteria, you should search for links that at least meet some of the criteria. Just a handful of such links will be enough to take your page to the top of search engine result pages.

War of the Search Engines – Google gaining its Lost Ground

War of the Search Engines – Google gaining its Lost Ground
comscore-us-search-engine-study
All the excitement of Bing is slowing down, and it seems, the honeymoon period is over for Microsoft’s ambitious search engine Bing — MSN turned Live turned Bing. According to a monthly study, comScore qSearch analysis, conducted by comScore, Google has gained market share in the explicit core search market (10,593 explicit queries in September against 10,259 in August) in the United States.

In the studied period (between August 2010 and September 2010), Bing has also gained a bit on total explicit queries (1,791 in September against 1,744 or August), and both of these search engines have grown partly at the expense of Yahoo and partly on AOL’s cost. (See image below).

3 SEO Optimized Title Writing Tips

3 SEO Optimized Title Writing Tips
I do not think there is any need to tell you how important it is to get on the first page of Google SERP (search engine result page), or on the first page of any other search engine for that matter. And I even do not feel inclined towards mentioning the importance of a title and a title tag in pushing your web page to the top slot in the search engine.

We all know the importance of a title tag, at least we claim to know so, but what we do not know is how to write a nearly perfect SEO-optimized title tag every time we set our fingers on the keyboard. This is what I am going to talk about in this blog post.
Write at least 5 variants of the title
The easiest way to write a title is to go with the title that comes first to your mind. This is the easiest way to fail as well, so better avoid it. Instead, write five variants of the same titles for your article and go with the one that has the most power. Do not settle for anything less than “powerful”. Your audience will see power only when you will feel it.
Remove unnecessary words
Some words that are necessary for an on-page title of a web page that are read by humans may not be necessary for title tags that are accessed by search engine bots. Titles of your web pages, blog posts, or articles, therefore, should be different from the title tag.

The article’s title can contain the words like a, an, or, if, etc., for they support other words in expressing the exact meaning of the title. But these and similar words should be kept aside when writing a title tag, for they do nothing but eat up precious real estate in SERP. We should avoid putting any unimportant word in title tag because the space is limited there, and it should be wisely used. Put two or more than two keywords in the title tag, if you have to, but do not insert any useless word.
Make title tag different
When I say make the title tag different I do not intend to suggest that your title tag should be entirely different from your actual title. All I meant to suggest is to write title tag in a way that conveys the entire gist of your title and article without being much different from the “on page” title.

I hope now you know that writing search engine optimized title is not a magic, it is just a skill. You can also acquire this skill if you work on the advices given above for some time.

How to Register a Domain Name for a Blog

How to Register a Domain Name for a Blog
Registering your blog’s domain name is a straightforward process. You use a domain registrar to buy your name, and then all you need to do is “point” your new domain at your Web host. Many domain registration services are available.

Visit any domain registrars to check whether your domain is available and then follow the domain registrar's instructions to register it. You can choose to register your domain for a single year or for multiple years at a time. Typically, registering for multiple years earns you a small discount. If you choose to register for only a year, you need to renew the domain in a year (assuming you want to keep your Web site going). Many domain registration companies also offer Web-hosting and e-mail packages.

Choosing a domain registration service choice really comes down to the domain management interface — the tools that are provided to you in order to manage your domain. Some management screens are incredibly difficult to work with. Finding a host that has a clean and easy-to-use interface makes a world of difference when you’re updating or making changes to your Web domain.

Popular registrars include

Go Daddy: Provides a long list of Web services from domain hosting, Web hosting, and e-mail address hosting. It has a decent reputation and is easy to contact should you require assistance.

Network Solutions: One of the grand daddies of all registrars. At one time, it was one of the few places you could register a domain. Services are varied and flexible, but domains are a little pricier here.

Domainsatcost.ca: Located in Canada, provides registrations for all major domains, including .com and .ca domains. They have a support number (long distance applies), but they do answer the telephone — something that is rare with domain hosts. Domainsatcost.ca is reasonably priced.

Keep your blog’s domain registration up to date. If you have any changes to your domain or contact information including your e-mail address, update your domain information immediately. If your information isn’t current, you could lose access to your domain or even miss e-mail reminders to renew your domain.

Mapping Your Domain Name to Work with Blogger

Mapping Your Domain Name to Work with Blogger

You can establish a more professional identity for your Blogger® blog by configuring it to point to one of the domain names you registered through us. Instead of entering your Blogger URL to view your latest blog post, visitors enter your domain name's URL. For example, by mapping your coolexample.blogspot.com blog to your www.coolexample.com domain name, visitors focus solely on your domain name.

To point your Blogger blog to your domain name, you set up domain name mapping, which configures your blog settings and domain name. You update your settings in your Blogger account and our Domain Manager:

Park the domain name you want to use with your Blogger account on our parked nameservers. For more information, see Parking Your Domain Name.
Edit the www CNAME record for the domain name you want to use with your Blogger account. This update tells the Web browser to open your Blogger blog when visitors enter your domain name's URL in the browser address bar.You can automatically configure your DNS with this tool.
Forward your domain name to use www. This step ensures your Blogger blog displays for visitors who go to your domain name with or without the www prefix. For example, it displays for visitors who entered both www.coolexample.com and coolexample.com.
Configure your Blogger account to use your domain name.

Any DNS changes you make can take up to 48 hours to reflect on the Internet.

How to transfer domain registered through Blogger to a new registrar?

How to transfer domain registered through Blogger to a new registrar?

I'm preparing a client for migrating his Blogger blog to a self-hosting WordPress site. The client is currently running his Blogger blog using a custom domain name which he registered through Blogger. Now that he wants to move to a self-hosted WordPress.org site, how can we transfer ownership of his domain name from Blogger to another registrar? Or, is this even necessary? I mean, can you set your Blogger domains' nameservers just like you can with any other domain registrar?

Blogger is not a registrar. When your client signed up, he or she should have received an e-mail from Google Apps detailing whether the domain was registered through eNom or GoDaddy (the registrar partners used for domain registrations).

If your client does not have his or her domain purchase confirmation e-mail, the DNS settings may be completed by observing the following process:

Log in to Google Apps using Blogger domain name, username, and password
Go to Domain Settings > Domain Names > Advanced DNS Settings to find the eNom/GoDaddy account information for the domain
Log in at eNom or GoDaddy to complete any desired changes
Not tested: Instructions culled from Blogger Help and The Blog Doctor (oddly enough, this process does not appear to be described in detail at the Blogger Help site).

Cool, thanks for the information! I've never worked with custom domains with Blogger and I figured they used a proper registrar and not "themselves". Thanks for the DNS settings tips, too. I'm not too surprised that the process isn't detailed at the Blogger help site -- clearly they want people to stay with (the newly updated) Blogger platform rather than move to WordPress or whatever! – mark Sep 5 '11 at 13:57

Blogging Tips for Beginners| Domain Name Registration

Blogging Tips for Beginners| Domain Name Registration

Taking your first step into the blogosphere is easy, but there are things to consider before you become a big blogger.
If you have a brilliant blog theme and are ready for readers, your first priority is to secure your own personal website by choosing a domain name and registering it.

Why do I need to register a domain name?

If you want to take blogging seriously, there are two main paths to take when it comes to registering a domain name:

Free Services allow you to host your site off another site using a subdomain (e.g. blogspot.com). Using these types of services can be convenient but they tend to limit features and enforce certain restrictions.
Professional Domain Registration is more beneficial in the long run. A registrar helps you manage your domain name and information as well as offers a variety of helpful services. WestHost provides additional advantages like directing where your domain points, securing several domain name registrations like misspellings, creating an email account for the domain and helping you maintain control of it.
Choosing the right domain name

Before you register your domain name, put considerable thought into selecting the right one. There are definitely dos and don’ts when it comes to the perfect domain name registration and we intend to help you strike gold with these suggestions:

Go for the obvious. Keep your domain name simple, straightforward, and relevant to purpose of your blog; this helps your audience recognize and remember you.
Keep it focused. Generic domain names (e.g. Pianos.com) are nearly all unavailable. Your best bet is to select a domain name that targets your idea more specifically (e.g. UsedPianos.com).
Hide from hyphens. Using a hyphen in your domain name is not recommended. More often than not, people forget to include a hyphen in a domain name, leading your audience to the wrong blog.
Beware of the length. Shorter domain names are more memorable, but not as readily available. On the other hand, longer domain names are not as easy to remember but can contain more keywords that boost your domain name’s ability to be seen in a search engine like Google or Yahoo.
We love talking about selecting domains so if you still can’t decide check out a few more suggestions here.

Selecting a domain registrar

If you have found the perfect domain name for your blog, the next step is actually registering the name with a domain registrar. Just like any purchase you always want to find a company with credibility. Over the last decade WestHost has created a global reputation for itself as a trusted domain name registrar.

In addition to credibility, price is also one of the most important things to consider with domain name registration. A lot of companies tend to be pricier for little or no reason. With WestHost you can register your domain name for as little as $9/year.

What do I need to have to register a domain?

When you have your domain name and registrar selected, the actual domain name registration process is easy. You should be prepared to provide contact information during the registration process. The required personal contact information will include your name, physical address, phone number and email address.

This information is required by the governing body of domains called the ICANN. Your information is filed into a public online directory, called WHOIS, so others can check the availability of domain names; unfortunately, this includes spammers. In the event you would like your information to remain private, registrars provide domain privacy.

Domain privacy protects your personal information and replaces it with the registrar’s information so you can rest easy. Better yet, domain privacy is cost friendly. WestHost provides this luxury for an additional $5/year. Right at the beginning of our registration process, WestHost asks you upfront if you would like domain privacy.

How long should I register the domain?

Once you have selected a registrar you need to determine how long you would like to own the domain name.

The time period of possession is a personal preference. The domain duration can be for one year or up to ten years. If you decide to play it on the safe side and purchase the domain for only a year, you will always have the opportunity to renew the domain for an extended period of time.

What’s next?

All in all, registering a domain name is a speedy process that only takes a few minutes to complete. After registering, you can expect about 24-48 hours until the domain becomes active. Once you are registered, you aren’t quite set-up to begin blogging. At this point, you should then turn your focus toward web hosting. At first this may sound daunting, but it will not be difficult. Next week, we will outline the ins and outs of web hosting so you can be ready to roll.
