Top 5 Mistakes When Trying To Build Your Own Website

By Man Ponce

You probably know that to expand a business you need a website; with so many tools and programs out there you might be thinking in doing it yourself. It seems easy, right? Well, it might not be as easy as you think.

If you are thinking in doing your own website you should be aware of what not to do. Below I list the most common mistakes people make when building their own website:

Using Flash in Homepage - When users visit a web page the last thing they want is to be waiting; they want to find what they are looking for. If a visitor is obliged to wait a long time for a flash animation to load most of them will get tired and leave the page. Also flash animation is not supported on ipads so you are leaving out a large audience.

Images - Many people think that because they have a little experience in graphic design is better to build a website with images and layers. When you do this there are always problems when loading the page, this happens especially when the images are not optimized.

Links - Make sure everything is working correctly; if you have a link, it has to work. This is crucial because a page that has things that don't work gives a terrible impression.

Create a website and think is forever - When you design a page, you have to think is like a shop window; it needs to change periodically, you have to include new sections, change images and improve content.

Overwhelming Content - Many people want to share so much information, say so many things about their business or company that they overwhelm the visitor with too much information. Text has to be relevant, useful but concise.

Make sure everything works perfectly or you won't give a good impression to your potential customers. When creating your web page you have to think about everything; every little detail counts. This is your presentation letter to the world and it has to be perfect.
