Websites That Succeed Versus Websites That Fail

By Lize Monelt

Websites are often judged by their appearances, similar to the old saying about books being judged by their covers. So if your pages look like they are past their expiry date, it's time for an image update. Appearance is one thing, but there is more to a successful website than that. Some websites that are fairly old looking are bring in money for the site owners and get traffic anyway. But you don't want to set your website up with such a disadvantage from the start.

A company that wants to increase profitability needs a good business plan and a website that is appealing. Whether your business sells a product or service that is digital or physical is an important factor when deciding on your website design. Is generating sales leads for an offline business a priority for you?

There needs to be a process on your site to get some value for your company. Great businesses aren't depending on people to just use their services and products, and find their website just by accident. Instead, they're actively utilizing well-established, well-recognized business models to allow them to profit off their online marketing.

To set yourself apart from the competition, it's a good idea to make your site original and engaging to those who visit it. With so much competition out there, it's almost impossible to have success without doing something original with your business. And if you want your site to be a success you must invest at least as much time courting new visitors using a variety of different techniques as you spend improving the content on your pages. Getting new visitors to see your webpage is of the utmost importance, so everyone should make efforts in this area every day, and the best techniques for you will become evident.

You should go with the assumption that every hit is a new visitor. Be sure to have the site designed well, so visitors can locate what they are looking for. Put yourself in their shoes, thinking, "If I was visiting this site, how would I get around?" Always have the customer in mind. Not everyone remembers this simple thing. Your favorite colors may not be the best fit for your product. Be sure to keep colors in mind that the visitor would like, not what you personally want. Your end user should always be kept in mind. Set your key take away goals and constantly analyze if you are moving toward or away from that goal. Communicate effectively and easily on your website, or don't bother having one.

Websites need to have a clearly set out design with a goal in mind. Website owners who have a solid understanding of what they expect to get out of their site will be able to work backwards in order to determine how the site should be managed, what content should be included, what messages should be communicated to visitors, and really everything involved with developing and running a website.
